Te long months of cold and snow have clearly gotten to
the residents of Lake George, N.Y. How else to explain their
annual outhouse race, in which teams of people compete to
pull customized porta-potties—complete with seated occu-
pants—across the frozen surface of the lake? Fortunately,
this bizarre event is only one among dozens of oferings at
Lake George’s winter festival, which is held every weekend in
February. Motorcycle races, hot-air balloon rides, bonfres,
cook-ofs, ice diving and a six-hole “polar golf ” course are
some of the events likely to be on the schedule for this year’s
festival. You can ski right to the shores of Lake George on
the Warren County Bikeway, a beautiful 10-mile rail-trail
that starts in the nearby town of Glens Falls. To learn more

If you’re hoping to “heel” the winter blues, then fol-
low the mushers over to Ashton, Idaho, this February
16, 17 and 18 for the annual American Dog Derby
(
www.americandogderby.com
). Since 1917, dogsled
enthusiasts have converged on Ashton to participate
in the longest-running dogsled race in the lower 48
states. Te main course runs from Ashton to Cascade
Corner of Yellowstone National Park, but the derby
ofers a host of other competitions, including a mutt
run, weight pull, snow sculpture contest and much
more. While in town, you can crunch out your
own course on the newly opened Ashton-Tetonia
Trail, built on the former Teton Valley Branch line
of the Union Pacifc Railroad. Improved signage
and new trailheads are currently in the works for
the 32-mile pathway, which features three re-
decked bridges and the Tetons as a backdrop. To
learn more about the trail, call Harriman State
Park at 208.558.7368.
