Te long months of cold and snow have clearly gotten to

the residents of Lake George, N.Y. How else to explain their

annual outhouse race, in which teams of people compete to

pull customized porta-potties—complete with seated occu-

pants—across the frozen surface of the lake? Fortunately,

this bizarre event is only one among dozens of oferings at

Lake George’s winter festival, which is held every weekend in

February. Motorcycle races, hot-air balloon rides, bonfres,

cook-ofs, ice diving and a six-hole “polar golf ” course are

some of the events likely to be on the schedule for this year’s

festival. You can ski right to the shores of Lake George on

the Warren County Bikeway, a beautiful 10-mile rail-trail

that starts in the nearby town of Glens Falls. To learn more
