Film enthusiasts might remember the
scene in the movie “Stand by Me” in
which four wily adolescents tempt fate
and cross a trestle, not realizing that a
train is set to come barreling down the
tracks a few minutes later. While this is a
case where we absolutely hope life
doesn’t
imitate art, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy
was pleased to hear that the Hollywood
icon, made famous by the 1986 block-
buster, is slated to become a feature of
the Great Shasta Rail Trail in progress in
northern California.
The Great Shasta is the up-and-
coming star of the rail-trail world!” says
April Gray, president of the Great Shasta
Rail Trail Association, one of the groups
spearheading trail development along the
former rail corridor.
According to Gray, the good condi-
tion of the trestle, which spans Lake
Britton, was one of the first things that
garnered attention from trail advocates
during an initial assessment of the cor-
ridor. However, the bridge’s stunning fea-
tures will present its greatest challenges.
Because the trestle is long and high, it
will be an expensive project and retrofit,”
adds Gray.
Hopefully, following in the footsteps
of the “Stand by Me” boys will make it all
worth it!
