It’s a sunny Saturday afternoon
in August. Streams of purple-
clad University of Washington
fans and families hustle down
the Burke-Gilman Trail to
reach Husky Stadium in time
for kick-off against Boise State
University. Some tote coolers and camp
chairs on their way to tailgates; others
swap excited high fives and shoulder
bumps, and woe to anyone trying to run
or pedal against the boisterous current.
While today is a big day for Husky
fans, they are far from the only people to
take to the 17-mile rail-trail. The pathway
pulses with activity year-round, and the
volume rarely slows, even during the sog-
giest winter months.
A decades-old jewel in Seattle
is on its way to becoming a
next-generation trail for active
transportation and recreation.
