SMOOCH THE POOCH
IN SOUTH CAROLINA
Mary Black Rail Trail:
What’s more adorable
than a dog in tiny human clothing? At the
Spartanbark Costumed Pet Parade this Oct. 26
in Spartanburg, S.C., you’ll see dozens of dogs
living out their wildest fantasies in funny, daz-
zling and original Halloween ensembles. Prizes
will be given for the best-costumed canines,
including best dog-and-owner combination.
The event is hosted by Partners for Active
Living
(
)
and the Spartanburg
Humane Society; donations of pet food are
welcome. The fun starts at Spartanburg’s Rail
Trail Dog Park, just off the Mary Black Rail
Trail, which provides for a nice dog walk south of
downtown.

THE BUZZ ON THE BIZZ IN
CALIFORNIA
Bizz Johnson National Recreation Trail:
Are
you a pumper or a pusher? Every Columbus Day
weekend, the residents of Susanville, Calif., dust off
the railroad tracks at the Bizz Johnson trailhead and
participate in some old-fashioned fun at the Rails to
Trails Festival hosted by Lassen Land & Trails Trust
(
).
This year, the festi-
val gets rollin’ on Oct. 11 at the historic Susanville
Railroad Depot and features handcar races (each
team needs four pumpers and one pusher), a chili
cook-off and salsa competition, and booths display-
ing wares from artisans and vendors. The festival
draws visitors from throughout northern California
to celebrate the region’s railroad history and local rail-
trails, such as the Bizz Johnson National Recreation
Trail, which begins across the street from the depot
and winds westward through woodlands and the
breathtaking Susan River Canyon.
