With pretty things for your eyes and tasty treats for your mouth,
the Chocolate & Chalk Art Festival
)
in Berkeley, Calif., offers a winning combina-
tion. On June 1, whimsical chalk drawings will fill the sidewalks
along North Shattuck Avenue in the city’s “Gourmet Ghetto” as art-
ists compete for prizes and the admiration of passersby. Event booths
sell tickets you can use to score delicious desserts in the neighbor-
hood’s businesses, including traditional offerings such as brownies and
gelato, or more unusual delights like chocolate pizza and chocolate
soup. You’ll also have the opportunity to shop for handmade arts and
crafts from vendors or win themed prizes in the raffle (last year’s win-
nings included a chocolate-colored diamond ring). Afterward, work
off those calories on the Ohlone Greenway, beginning a mere half-mile
away in Ohlone Park. The tree-lined rail-trail is itself a beauty, connect-
ing community gardens, public art, wetlands and parks.

a kickoff event for the Kentucky Derby
Festival. The extraordinary fireworks display each
spring (this year on April 20) is the largest annual
pyrotechnics show in the nation and is attended
by half a million people. But even before all those
flashy explosions light the night, more than 60 civil-
ian and military planes will perform stunts and fly-
bys in one of the country’s biggest air shows. Enjoy a
front-row seat to these festivities along the Louisville
Riverwalk, perfectly situated in downtown Louisville
on the banks of the Ohio River. The trail is within
view of the George Rogers Clark Memorial Bridge
(
also known as the Second Street Bridge), a launch-

fireworks.
